Major

Continuing Our Major

The UNCW Communication Studies Department began in the early 1970s, and since then has become one of the largest undergraduate programs with about 550 communication and pre-communication majors combined. Communication Studies is a social science, an arts and humanities discipline, and a practical craft. While historically it was a public speaking craft, communication studies has grown to include all forms of crafting a message through various digital media. The UNCW Communication Studies department recognizes a number of concentrations within the major:

Communication Theory

Rhetorical Theory

Public Speaking

Integrated Marketing Communication

Digital Media Production

Media

Culture and Society

Storytelling

Health Communication

It is because of the Department of Communication Studies faculty that students are able to learn and discover the art of communication. Majors are taught how to use, analyze, and create communication effectively. The professors at UNCW are modals of the subjects taught, and through them we learn how to manuver through the broad discipline of communication.
