"Above all, our primary purpose is to provide our majors with a degree in which the philosophy, practice, criticism, and study of communication are emphasized and balanced. Specifically, we seek to integrate application with theory."

The mission of communication is to use messages to generate meaning across various contexts, cultures, channels, and media. The mission of the UNCW Department of Communication Studies, is to provide majors with the knowledge and skills to deliver that message.

The Department of Communication Studies faculty and majors are committed to scholarly and artistic endeavors. As a group, they explore all viable research and creative venues possible that afford scholarly expression. A communication major understands rhetoric, public speaking, and theories that contribute to all forms of expression.
