This is the thing; you won’t really know, or appreciate, how good your education was until after it’s done. I remember being in my corporate job and assigned communication projects that entailed Junior year course level work - and I was far ahead of some of my peers. I attribute a lot of my successes as a communicator to UNCW and the quality of the education I received. Even though you will want to curse their very names at times, the professors are awesome. Take advantage to their knowledge! I promise you, it will pay off.
What area/classes did you focus on while you were in COM?
I received my BA in Communication Studies with a minor in Creative Writing. In Coms, I focused mostly on theory and public relations. After college, I initially went into media relations and internal communications.
What do you miss most about being a COM student?
I actually miss the theory part of it. Meaning, the in-depth thought and philosophy behind human communication. I know, totally nerding out here but once you get out in the corporate world it’s all about RESULTS and doing the job. Having a solid understanding of how and why communications work will actually help you make it work.
What is one piece of advice you would give yourself if you could go back?
Focus heavily on digital communications and take more writing classes. I’d also tell myself to take a moment, sit back, and enjoy the entire college experience. Not just the Com part of it, but all of it
